Difficult/ Uncomfortable Conversations

The most important thing that we should be talking about, is the conversation that we are trying to avoid. It's the elephant in the room!!!


Approach:


Come to the table with a calm and open mind, not emotionally charged

Name the problem - having examples is very helpful as that clarifies the issue

Be direct and specific

Discuss the impact of the situation to you and other stakeholders, and what is at stake

Be clear that your intention is to solve the problem

Invite the person to respond

Don't interrupt or rescue the person when they get uncomfortable or emotional

Listen

Close with accountability and a timeline
